30 Days In: A Reflection On Community, Purpose & Possibility
Dear Community,
It has been a little over 30 days since I stepped into this role as the new Executive Director of Asian Women for Health.
In this short time, I’ve been deeply moved by the strength, resilience, and care that defines the communities we serve. From our supporters and partners to our volunteers and staff – I want to thank you for the trust you’ve placed in me and in this organization. It is an incredible honor to carry forward a mission rooted in equity, connection, and people.
As the daughter of refugees and a lifelong community organizer, this work is deeply personal. Though I wasn’t born in Boston, this city has become my home. It’s where I’ve built a life, am choosing to raise my family, and found a community – one grounded in care and shared purpose. I’ve been welcomed, challenged, and inspired here – and that sense of rootedness and belonging fuels my commitment to this work. I’ve always believed that real change starts in community – where we come together to listen, to lift one another up, and to imagine a better way forward. It is the same belief that led me to Asian Women for Health, and it will guide every step of our work ahead.
Over the past month, I’ve spent time in conversation – with staff, collaborators, and the people we serve. I’ve heard stories of strength and survival. I’ve also learned about the barriers our communities continue to face in accessing care, and I’ve witnessed the fierce commitment so many of you bring to breaking those barriers down.
While we may find ourselves in a time of great uncertainty, I firmly believe that what makes our communities so powerful is our ability to show up for one another and to build spaces where everyone feels like they belong.
That’s why our work must not only continue – it must grow. We are continually expanding our culturally responsive health education and training, deepening our research partnerships, and ensuring that people remain at the core of all that we do. At the same time, we’re laying the foundation for a stronger and more sustainable future. I am committed to building a culture where care and accountability go hand in hand – where our team and our community feel seen, supported, and equipped to lead.
This is just the beginning. In the months ahead, I look forward to sharing more about where we’re headed – and how we’ll get there together. I’ll be in the community, attending events, visiting partners, and finding opportunities to meet you where you are. Whether by attending our CelebrAsians Gala at the end of May (tickets are still available – don’t miss out!), signing up for our newsletter, or simply spreading the word – we invite you to join us in this movement.
Thank you again for welcoming me with such warmth. I am honored to be in community with you, and I look forward to continuing this journey – in lockstep – as we work toward a more just and joyful future for all.
With gratitude,
Colleen M. Nguyen, MPH
