“I care deeply about my health, but when I tried to book a physical exam, I had no idea where to begin. I didn’t even know the right questions to ask. Should I call a clinic, urgent care or something else? In the U.S., primary care providers are central but that concept was completely unfamiliar to me. I had to make so many phone calls just to figure out how to schedule something that should have been simple,” said Xukun Guo, a student from our Community Health Impact Fall Training.

Xukun’s struggle illuminated the barriers that many immigrants and underserved communities face in accessing healthcare. The uncertainty of navigating a foreign system, combined with concerns like visa status, only compounds these challenges.

“These insights fuel my passion for serving as a liaison between patients and healthcare providers, ensuring equitable access and care. I know firsthand how frustrating it is to feel lost in a healthcare system, and I want to be the one to provide clear, accessible guidance and resources.”

When Xukun first heard about AWFH’s CHI training program, it was almost too late to apply. Driven by excitement, she came directly to our office and after hearing her passion, we made the effort to find a spot for her.

“Speaking up for myself was hard,” she reflects, “but it’s even harder to speak for someone else. That’s why this opportunity means so much to me.”

Xukun’s story is a powerful reminder of why our work matters. When we invest in individuals, we don’t just change their lives—we create a ripple effect that impacts entire communities. We‘re excited to help bridge the gaps towards accessing equitable healthcare and teaching passionate individuals on how to become a liaison between themselves and the U.S. healthcare system!
